Deborah Steinkopf

I’m an experienced nonprofit professional with 30+ years working for social change. I have helped nonprofits increase organizational effectiveness and mission impact, in both salaried and consulting capacities. I have worked with nonprofit start-ups, nonprofits with strong brand identities, and nonprofits in transition. I have also served on nonprofit boards, government advisory committees, and coalitions.

As a leader and a collaborative partner, I help build organizational capacity, scale programs, assemble effective staff teams, and secure public and private financing to support these efforts. I’m a natural strategist. In every organization I’ve worked, I’ve grown contributed revenue and government funds from all levels of government. Effective budgeting, cash management, and revenue generation practices have all contributed to my success as an organizational leader and I am eager to share these practices with other nonprofit leaders.

Since launching my consulting practice in 2016, I have worked with 48 nonprofits with diverse missions. I’m a frequent presenter and guest lecturer on government funding for PSU’s certificate in fundraising and have published articles on grant strategy in the Journal of the Grant Professionals Association. I have a Master’s in Social Work and a Master’s in Public Policy from SUNY Albany. You can learn more about my practice at https://www.steinkopfstrategies.com/.

With twenty-five years of nonprofit and financial services leadership experience, it has been a fantastic journey. I’m most proud of the steps forward in centering equity in our fundraising and communications while raising new resources. Before starting my own practice, I led the fundraising and communications team at REACH Community Development and as Vice President of Development at OMSI, one of the nation’s leading science museums. Before transitioning to fundraising, I spent 16 years in commercial and consumer banking. I thirst for learning and hold Degrees in Psychology and Sociology, an MBA, Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential, and a Certified Treasury Professional (CTP).

In addition to consulting, I teach Nonprofit/Government finance and fundraising in the Masters of Public Administration and Masters of Nonprofit Leadership program at Portland State University. I’m also an executive search consultant for Nonprofit Professionals Now. Volunteering is a core part of my ethos and has led me to serve on various Nonprofit Boards of Directors ranging from homeless services to public radio. Currently, I serve on the Community Advisory Board for the public radio station KQAC, AllClassical Portland; the international board of Rogare, the fundraising think tank.
